Tom, who runs Music Teachers Australia

Hi, I'm Tom. I run Music Teachers Australia from Queensland.

I used to teach guitar before I became a full-time web developer, so I know first-hand that finding new students can be hard. I still play guitar, just for pleasure these days, and I built this site to help students find good teachers, and good teachers find students.

Why it exists

When you're looking for a teacher, you want the important details up front: what they teach, where, what a lesson costs, their experience, and what other students thought. I wanted a directory where a teacher can add all of that for free, rather than having the basics locked behind a paid plan.

So a free profile includes a photo, lessons and prices, qualifications, links to the teacher's own website and socials, student reviews, and a verified child-safety check badge. Students can message teachers directly, with no account needed.

How the site pays for itself

  • It is free for students. There are no booking fees, and no commission is taken from lessons. You arrange lessons and payment with the teacher yourselves.
  • Teachers can list for free. There is an optional Premium plan which places their profile above free listings and adds a video introduction and visitor statistics. Premium profiles are marked, so you can always tell which ones they are.

What we check, and what we don't

When a teacher submits a Working with Children Check, we look it up on the state's public register before a badge appears on their profile. How verified checks work.

Everything else on a profile, including the bio, prices and qualifications, is written by the teacher. We haven't met them or watched them teach, so please ask your own questions before the first lesson.

Not a teachers' association

Music Teachers Australia is an independent directory. It is not connected with the state Music Teachers' Associations, such as MTANSW, VMTA or QMTA.
