Introduction

Music Teachers Australia ("we," "our," or "us") respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our website and services. We handle personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

Information We Collect

We collect information that you provide directly to us, including:

  • Account information (name, email, phone number)
  • Profile information (bio, location, instruments taught)
  • Lesson types and pricing information
  • Communication preferences

Student Enquiries

You do not need an account to contact a teacher. When you send an enquiry through a teacher's profile, we collect and store:

  • Your name and email address
  • Your phone number, if you choose to provide one
  • The instrument you are enquiring about and your message
  • The page the enquiry was sent from

These details are emailed to the teacher you contacted and shown in their dashboard so they can reply to you directly. They are shared only with that teacher. We do not use your details to send you marketing, and we do not pass them to other teachers. You can ask us to delete an enquiry at any time by contacting us.

Requests for a Teacher

If you search and we have nobody who fits, you can ask us to let you know when we do. That form is optional and needs no account. When you use it, we collect and store:

  • Your name and email address
  • The instrument, lesson format and location you asked for, if you gave them
  • Anything you wrote in the notes field
  • The page the request was sent from

We use this for two things, and nothing else. The first is to email you when we find a teacher who suits — a person does that, not an automated system, so it may take a while. The second is to work out which teachers we are missing and where, so that we know which parts of the country to go and recruit in.

Your request is notshown to teachers, sold, or passed on as a lead list, and we do not use it to send you marketing. You can ask us to delete it at any time by replying to the confirmation email or contacting us — and if we have not found anyone, you never hear from us again.

Working with Children Checks

Teachers may choose to give us the details of their Working with Children Check — called a Blue Card in Queensland, a WWVP registration in the ACT, an RWVP in Tasmania and an Ochre Card in the Northern Territory. This is optional, and no part of the site requires it.

If you do, we collect and store the check number, the state that issued it, and whatever else that state's register asks for when looking a number up — and nothing else:

  • The name the register searches on — a family name in some states, the name printed on your card in others
  • Your date of birth, asked for only in New South Wales and the ACT, the two registers that key on one. Six of the eight do not, so we do not ask there. If you submitted a check before September 2026 we may still hold a date of birth for a state that turned out not to need it; you can remove it by withdrawing and re-entering your check.
  • The expiry date printed on your card, asked for only in Queensland and the ACT, whose registers will not search without it. It is what we type into the register — the date on your badge is the one the register gives back to us, not the one you typed.

We use these details for one purpose: to look your check up on the public register run by the issuing state, and to check it again when it is due to expire. We do not disclose them to anyone, and your check number is never shown on your profile or anywhere else on the site. What the public sees is only which check you hold, the date we verified it and the date it expires.

You can withdraw your check at any time from your profile settings, which deletes the number and every lookup detail with it immediately, and everything we hold is deleted when you delete your account. See what a verified check means for how the badge works.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide and improve our services
  • Connect students with music teachers
  • Process payments and subscriptions
  • Send you relevant updates and communications
  • Comply with legal obligations

Information Sharing

We share your information with a small number of third-party service providers who help us run the platform, and only to the extent needed for them to do their job:

  • Clerk — account creation and sign-in
  • Stripe — payment and subscription processing
  • Resend — sending transactional emails (e.g. enquiry notifications)

These providers only receive the information needed to perform their service and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes. We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

Analytics

We record basic, first-party usage events — profile page views and contact-button clicks — against teacher profiles, so teachers can see how their profile is performing. This data is not shared with third parties and is not linked to your identity if you are a visitor browsing without an account.

Cookies

We only use strictly necessary cookies — none for advertising or third-party tracking:

  • Clerk sets session cookies to keep you signed in and secure your account.
  • We set a short-lived cookie to remember which subscription plan you selected while you complete sign-up, cleared automatically once checkout starts.
  • If you subscribe to a paid plan, you are taken to Stripe's own checkout page, where Stripe may set its own cookies under its privacy policy.

Data Retention

We keep your information only while your account is active or as needed to provide the service. If you ask us to delete your account or an enquiry, we delete it promptly rather than on a fixed schedule.

Children's Privacy

Our services are intended for adults arranging music lessons. If a parent or guardian is enquiring on behalf of a child, only the parent or guardian's contact details should be submitted through an enquiry form.

Data Security

We implement appropriate security measures to protect your personal information. However, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure.

Your Rights

You may request to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Correct or update your information
  • Delete your account and associated data
  • Opt-out of marketing communications
